West End Refugee Service (WERS)
About the opportunity
WERS offers practical and emotional support to asylum seekers and refugees living in the West End of Newcastle.
Volunteers are required to visit refugees and asylum seekers both individually and within a family group within their homes.
The aim is to offer friendship and support help them access local services and to familiarise them with their local community. Volunteers must be aged 18+.

WERS offer a wide range of activities including: a clothing store; befriending; advice and support.
What are they looking for?
Volunteers should have an interest in asylum issues and human rights
Have good interpersonal skills
Be able to listen and understand difficulties
Have a non-judgmental approach

Action Language

Action Language provides free ‘Skills for Life’ English classes, at different ability levels, for anyone that cannot access mainstream ESOL classes. 4 hours teaching per week per person.
